A serious US-301 accident in Maryland left at least three people injured Tuesday morning, August 25, 2026, after a vehicle fleeing from law enforcement crashed into multiple uninvolved vehicles in Brandywine, Prince George’s County.
The crash happened on southbound Crain Highway/US-301 near MD-5, close to the Charles County–Prince George’s County line. The incident followed a police pursuit involving a vehicle authorities were attempting to stop.
According to reports, Arlington County police had been monitoring a vehicle believed to be occupied by someone with outstanding felony warrants. Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies subsequently attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to pull over and fled.
Deputies pursued the vehicle for approximately five miles before ending the pursuit. About three minutes later, however, the suspect vehicle reportedly crossed the median and began traveling north in the southbound lanes of US-301.
The vehicle then collided with other vehicles near Substation Road, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash and injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene and had to remove people from the damaged vehicles.
At least three people were injured in the crash. Two were occupants of the fleeing vehicle. One suffered critical or life-threatening injuries, while another sustained minor injuries. The drivers of the other vehicles were reportedly not seriously injured.
The collision caused significant traffic problems along US-301. All southbound lanes were blocked near MD-5, with transportation officials warning motorists of substantial delays in the area.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation. Maryland State Police are investigating the collision, while authorities are also examining the events surrounding the pursuit and the actions of the fleeing driver.
The incident began after authorities were alerted that the vehicle was associated with a person wanted on outstanding warrants in Virginia. According to local reporting, officers were attempting to apprehend the suspect when the driver refused to stop.
The decision to continue driving at a high rate of speed ultimately led to the vehicle entering the wrong side of US-301, where it struck vehicles that were not involved in the original pursuit.
The crash created additional difficulties for commuters traveling through Brandywine and between Prince George’s and Charles counties during the Tuesday morning commute. Motorists were advised to avoid the affected section of US-301 and allow additional time for travel.
Authorities have not reported a fatality from this particular crash. The most serious injuries reported so far involve a person from the fleeing vehicle who was transported for emergency medical treatment.
Investigators are expected to review evidence from the crash scene, statements from witnesses and information related to the original pursuit as they determine what charges may follow.
For drivers traveling through Brandywine and southern Prince George’s County, the incident serves as a significant traffic warning, with delays expected while authorities complete their investigation and clear the damaged vehicles.
